Description: Samos is the 8th largest Greek island. Located in the Aegean Sea and is just 1200 meters (~4000 feet) from Turkey. The prefecture of Samos consists of the islands of Samos and Ikaria and Fournoi. The island of Samos consists of four municipalities: Vathy, Karlovasi, Pythagorean and Marathokampos and capital Samos. Samos is home to one of the greatest philosophers and mathematicians of ancient world amongst them Pythagoras, Aristarchus the astronomer and the philosopher Epicurus. According to mythology, born in Samos was goddess Hera and there are the remains of a temple dedicated to her. Samos in ancient times was the first naval power in the Aegean and Ionian seas. It is also famous for its wine. According to legend, Dionysus, god of wine loved the Samians as they helped him kill the Amazons, which despised him. To their delight he taught them the art of viticulture. The island has a rich natural heritage with alternating mountains and plains, golden beaches with crystal blue waters, and a great and remarkable history with many monuments, offering visitors plethora of choices and activities. Samos has an airport and is connected by ferry to Piraeus, the Dodecanese, Chios, Mytilini, Ikaria, Fournous and Kusadasi in Turkey, where the ancient Ephesus.
