Description: Karpathos is located in the middle of Karpathian Sea between Rhodes and Crete and after Rhodes is the second largest island in the island complex of Dodecanese. It covers an area of 301.2 square kilometers (~75,000 acres), has a coastline of 160 km (100 miles) and the population of the island reaches 6,511 residents. The capital is “Pigadia” (in greek means Wells) and is where ~2,180 residents live. Karpathos stands out for its important geo-strategic position as dominates in the southeastern Aegean gates and is a link between Rhodes and Crete. In terms of geomorphology the island is mostly rocky and consists of limestone. Although it was previously green today hosts some pine forests in the north and south of the island. The highest peak is 1220 meters (4000 feet) and in general the rugged terrain of the island creates a beautiful environment that causes the visitor's interest. The rocky and rugged coastline are home to several species of birds and many trails for hiking lead to some isolated coast. On the other small coves create beautiful beaches accessed relatively easily from the road. The interest of tourists gather a number of beaches have been awarded the blue flag, but also the characteristics taverns offering everyone the unique experience the flavors of the island. In recent years, the island's economy opened good prospects in the tourism sector but the sea has always played a major role in the lives of residents. Well-known fact is the Carpathian sponge fishermen and sailors for centuries contributed greatly to the income of the island. Some interesting caves found in the center of the island is full of stalactites and stalagmites.
