Folklore & History Museum of Xanthi

Xanthi Museum

This museum sheds light into the everyday lives of the town's inhabitants in the past. A beautiful overview of the town's multicultural life.

The Folklore Museum of Xanthi is located in the city center and it is housed in a traditional building designed by a Russian architect that follows the Renaissance style. The mansion that belonged to the family of tobacco traders Kougioumtzoglou is a perfect example of the buildings that started to be built in the city during the last part of the Ottoman rule after 1830. The major characteristic of the decoration is red bricks, while the interior murals are made by German romantic painters during 1880.

The museum that is situated almost next to the Cathedral-Square, belongs to a very central area of Xanthi which was dominated by Greeks during the Turkish occupation and still maintains elements from that period.

A potential visit to the museum gives the opportunity to have a closer look at the historical and social changes which took place in Xanthi over the last centuries. People from various age groups can learn more about the everyday life in the city of Xanthi, the local habits over the past centuries, and see items and tools used by people on an everyday basis.
