The Archaeological Museum of Volos was built in 1909 with a donation by Alexios Athanasakis who was originally coming from the village of Portaria, Pelion. For this reason, the museum itself bears the name of its donor.
The construction plan of the building was prepared by the engineer of the Archaeological Society A. Angelidis, while the construction itself was implemented by the architect I.P. Scout.
The museum is located by the seafront promenade of Volos, inside the park of Anavros. A large number of archeological findings from the broader area made urgent the need for the museum expansion. At last, this long-term need was realized in 2004.
