Russian Dockyard Ruins

Poros Attraction

The ruins of the old Russian Dockyard look like the setting of a movie. In front, there's a small beach bar with a friendly owner.

It is built amphitheatrically on a pine cove, on the west side of the port of Poros. When Russians won the war against the Ottoman Empire, according to the Treaty of Küçük Kainartzi (1774), they were able to travel through the Aegean Sea. For this reason, they built this Naval station in order to use it for supplies and for repairing small damages to the ships.

The initial structure was given to the Greek government after a request by Prime Minister Ioannis Kapodistrias. Thus, Russia built a new one, with even bigger storage space. During the years that followed, the power of Tsar and the money spent on the Navy were declining, up to a point that at the station there was only one Russian guard.

The station was finally closed, it was bought by individuals and it was listed as a protected monument by the Ministry of Culture in 1989. Today, in front of the building there is one of the most beautiful beaches of the island that hosted many theatrical plays due to its amphitheatrical shape.
