The temple of Poseidon on Poros was built at an altitude of 190 meters above sea level. Scientists argue that the place was used from the Early Helladic or from the Neolithic period, but the temple was built in the late 6th or early 5th century BC. It was continued to be used in the Hellenistic and Roman periods, but it is unclear when and why its function stopped.
It was a very well known asylum, which was indeed the place where the orator Demosthenes fled and eventually died after his exile from Athens.
The sanctuary was very helpful to learn about the habits and religious rituals of the ancient Greeks. While further excavations in the settlement of the western temple's department are expected to shed light on the everyday lives of residents of Poros.
