Mytikas is the highest peak of Mount Olympus and was considered the mythological home of the 12 Gods of antiquity. After mountain Rila in Bulgaria, it is the second-highest mountain in the Balkan peninsula and the highest mountain in Greece.
The holiness of the place made probably the ancient Greeks not to approach or to conquer the top of the mountain. Excavations show that they were reaching the nearby peak Agios Antonios in order to leave their tributes there.
It was only in 1913 when the hunter from Litochoro Christos Kakalos was the first who step on the peak of Olympus while he was guiding two hikers from Switzerland Frederic Boissonnas and Daniel Baud-Bovy.
Today there is a great number of hikers from Greece and abroad who are aiming to reach the peak of the mountain. It is a feasible target that has to be accompanied by some obligatory principles in order to be successful and eliminate any risks. Decent equipment, correct clothing, the right mindset, and a well-organized plan will give the opportunity even to less experienced hikers to climb (scramble) the mountain and reach the top.
