It is in the city center and is probably one of the most well-known landmarks of Karditsa. It was built during the period 1925-1930 when Asterios Alamanis was the mayor of the city.
The whole structure follows all the contemporary European standards, while its designer is coming from France. Its location was chosen by taking into consideration the town planning and the location of the traditional market place.
Throughout the years the building suffered several damages and there have been many restoration projects. From an architectural point of view, it is a perfectly square building, with clean, geometric lines and symmetry. In 1992, it was added to the list of buildings of European Architectural Heritage.
