The graves of Venizelos are located in Akrotiri just a few kilometers away from the city center of Chania. There are two graves, one of Eleftherios Venizelos and the other of his son Sofoklis, both Prime Ministers of Greece.
Eleftherios Venizelos is considered as one of the most important politicians who contributed to the creation of modern Greece. He was originally from Crete and he was a prominent leader of the Greek national liberation movement. He is also well-known for his role in the expansion of Greece and the adoption of liberal-democratic policies.
The same spot hosts the statue of the Cretan hero Spyros Kagialedakis or Kagiale. He was the one that stood on the spot holding the Greek flag high, while the region was being bombed during the revolution of Akrotiri in 1897.
From the hilltop where the graves are situated, someone can enjoy the perfect view of the city of Chania. There are many who choose to have coffee accompanied by a cake or drink to the nearby cafeteria named Koukouvagia.
