The Holy Cathedral of St. Nicholas is a custard-colored big church that is located in the central square of Alexandroupoli.
Its construction began in 1898 when even the city of Alexandroupolis was still named after the Turkish name Dedeagatch. Famous architects and craftsmen came from Constantinople and started the building process with money raised from the local residents' fundraising.
The design of the church is cruciform with a dome and the temple which is made of gray marble is identical to the temple of the Church of the Holy Trinity Stavrodromi of Constantinople. The top of the iconostasis is the exceptional work of artist P.G.Pergaminelli of Mytilene.
