The peninsula of Methana belongs to the South Aegean volcanic arc where there is a series of active volcanos like this of Santorini and Nisyros. Methana is located at the west edge of this arc and has also a significant geothermal activity.
The most well-known among the volcanos of Methana is the "Kameno Vouno" (burnt mountain) near the village of Kameni Chora. A hiking path of approximately 1.5 kilometers leads to the peak of a 412 meters cone that corresponds to the crater. The top that is not actually a typical crater has a breathtaking view of the Saronic Gulf.
There are several volcanos at the peninsula and most of them can be reached through hiking paths which construct a net of routes approximately 60 kilometers in total. This favorite hiking destination includes impressive volcanic landscapes, views of the Saronic islands and the Peloponnese as well as pristine nature.
