Agathonos Monastery

Experience between Lamia and Karpenisi

This monastery, very interestingly, hosts a Natural History Museum, peacock kennels, and a wild animal refuge that gathers deer and other animals.

Agathonos monastery is located 7 kilometers away from Ipati village, next to the National Forest of Oiti, at an altitude of 533 meters.

According to the tradition, the old monastery where Agathonas was living was destroyed due to erosion, and the icon of the Virgin Mary disappeared. The icon was found by the monk in a cave, where he built the new monastery. Researchers date the foundation of the current monastic structure between the 14th and the 15th century. While the monastery was named after him shortly after his death.

During the War of Independence against the Turks, many Greeks used the monastery as a refuge. For this reason, the Turks and more specifically Dramalis burned it in 1822. Despite the fire, many of the relics and the hand scripts were saved and they are displayed to the visitors of the monastery.
