If someone visits Kavala, one of the "must" things to do, is to walk around the narrow streets of the old city. It is actually a trip to the past since the paved streets and the old well-preserved buildings create and a unique "antique atmosphere".
The visitor can start from the Karaoli square, go up to Poulidou street, pass through Imaret and the yard of Mehmet Ali and reach the lighthouse to admire the magnificent view. Then, a further walk towards the Castle and the old aqueduct (Kamares) that are located on the other side of the old city is also recommended.
The impressive monuments and the historic places are combined with modern buildings. All are erected amphitheatrically and offer a great view of the sea, making the visit to the old part of the city an unforgettable experience. During this walk, the visitor can find plenty of small tavernas and taste local dishes and other specialties which include mostly fish and seafood.
