Alamana is a bridge of the Spercheios river and is famous for the battle that has been conducted there on April 1821. It is related to the Greek Revolution and the Struggle for Independence against the Turks in 1821.
Omer Vrionis left Thessaly to Peloponnese with 8.000 Turkish soldiers in order to suppress the revolt. Athanasios Diakos with his men waited for him trying to block his passage at Alamana river (the former name of Spercheios river). On the morning of 23 April 1821, the battle of Alamana began, with the men of Athanasios Diakos to defended their land, and causing a lot of damage to their enemy. Athanasios Diakos and his 48 men fought for many hours until they were all dead.
Diakos was captured alive and was taken in Lamia on the 24 April. There, after refusing to cooperate with the Turks, he was horribly tortured and died a martyr's way (he was impaled). His death shocked the people and he became a symbol of the War of Independence. The bridge of Alamana is located very close to Lamia, and 3 kilometers west from Thermopylae.
