Alexandroupolis - Avantas Castles Avantas Castles
The Avanta-River castle located north of Alexandroupoli and is built on a hill at the village Avanta. The castle is of the medieval era and has three square towers still standing. In addition some parts of the double wall are still preserved. Its construction was to protect from Bulgarian raids and other tribes from the north, but also the location assists the guardian of the fort to control the passage of the plain of Komotini to the east. The origin of the castle is unclear historically, but according to the prevailing opinion, the castle was built in the 13th century.
