The Byzantine museum of Fthiotida prefecture opened its doors in 2007 and presents all important findings from the Byzantine period of the area. It is housed in the renovated buildings of Stratonon, built in 1836, when the borders of Greece at the time where passing through here. The exhibition area is on two floors and the items of the museum come from all Fthiotida region. On the first floor you can see items from the Paleochristianic period and on the second floor you can see items of the Byzantine period. In a specially designed room you can see a large part of the coin collection of Konstantinos Kotsilis which has coins from ancient Greece, Rome, Byzantine empire, medieval era and modern times as well as matrixes for coins used in the Mint of Ipati in the 13th century. There are plans of expansion of the collections and the exhibitions, since the region is full of Byzantine artefacts. The museum organises many events and it was awarded as one of the five most active museums of Greece by UNESCO.
