The town of Stavros or the "Beach of Stavros" as it was previously named is located around 80 kilometers from the city of Thessaloniki. It is the major settlement and the seat of the Municipality of Volvi and its permanent population is approximately 3500 inhabitants.
The majority of Stavros inhabitants have an origin from Asia Minor since after the Treaty of Lausanne many Christians who lived there moved and settled here. During the last three decades, expatriates and immigrants from Georgia, Albania, and Bulgaria settled here as well.
Already from the '50s the coastline of Stavros started to attract tourists from the broader area of Macedonia as well as from the neighboring countries. Through the years this tendency became an industry for the area and today there is a great number of hotels and rooms to let that attract tourist groups from Bulgaria, Serbia, Czech Republic, Hungary, Germany, and many others.
