Lake Volvi

Experience between Asprovalta and Arnaia

The largest lake in Macedonia has 24 fish species and many birds. Excellent for walks and relaxation, once here, try also the food.

The Volvi lake is located approximately 40 kilometers east from the city of Thessaloniki and just 8 kilometers from the village of Stauros and the sea coastline.

Very close to the northern shore of the lake runs the Egnatia road that today serves as a national road that connects the major cities of northern Greece. But Egnatia road has also historical importance since already from the Roman era it was connecting Rome with Constantinople. East of the lake is situated the narrow valley of Rentina that is also known as the "Macedonian Tempi".

Just 10 kilometers west of Volvi the lake of Koroneia is located. About a million years ago, those two lakes were forming one huge lake named Mygdonia. Today both of them are parts of the famous natural reserve "Volvi-Koroneia" and being one of the eleven most important wetlands of Greece it is protected by the Ramsar International Convention.

An official observatory provides the opportunity to every visitor to admire the great number of waterfowl and aquatic birds either during their migration journey or as they build their nest in order to lay their eggs and pass a whole season by the lake.
