The Byzantine Museum of Veria is very close to the center of the city and it is housed at the old Markos Mill. It is a newly renovated industrial building that dates from the beginning of the 20th century and is located at the preserved district of Kiriotissa. The museum covers an area of 720 square meters and has three floors each one of which hosts a different part of the exhibition.
The exhibition includes significant exhibits from the Byzantine era, such as paintings, murals from church walls or other buildings, mosaic floors as well as hand scripts. Pottery artifacts, coins, wooden, and marble sculptures are also among the displayed items. All those describe the cultural and religious background of the different historic periods, while together with the everyday tools and items, construct an image of the life in the city and the broader area during the centuries.
The museum aims to shed light on the regional and local historical characteristics, while at the same time other exhibits show the connection of Veroia with all the important cities of the Byzantine Empire, such as Constantinople, Thessaloniki, and Kastoria. It is an active part of the local community and attracts many visitors on an annual basis.
