The Barbuta district is located in the north-east part of the city next to the Tripotamos river. Its name comes from a fountain that still exists in the area and through the years it started to refer mainly to the Jewish district of the city.
According to the researchers the Jewish district dates from the 50 AD and the Roman period. The area attracted more inhabitants with Jewish origin coming from Spain during the end of the 15th AD century. The district was always "separated" from the rest of the town, while it was characterized by its distinctive architectural patterns, the natural beauty, and the dense vegetation.
The narrow cobbled alleys and the impressive mansions are expanding around the old Jewish Synagogue that stands for its architecture as well as for its interior decoration. Only a promenade at the streets of Barbuta offers the notion of traveling to another era. And this is the reason that not only tourist but also many locals choose this "hidden gem" for their small walks in the city.
