Nea Kameni Volcanic Park

Santorini Experience

Geologically the newest island in the Mediterranean Sea was formed by the active Santorini volcano. It is located in the middle of the Caldera.

Nea Kameni is an island made from the volcanic activity in the center of Caldera and it is called "The Volcano" by locals. Its formation started in 1570, and is referred to in medieval and Ottoman hand scripts as "Small Kameni". Today the area of the island is 340 hectares and the highest point reaches 127 meters above sea level.

It has two small docks for small boats, one in Taxiarhis and one in Erinias. Many tourists visit it every day with small boats that start from Fira. Someone who is visiting Santorini has to visit Nea Kameni, since walking on an active volcano isn't something that people get to do every day!
