This medieval fortress in the port of Rhodes had received many reinforcements over the centuries and played an important role in the defense of the city, while from the 17th century includes a lighthouse built on its roof.

When the Fortress of Agios Nikolaos on Rhodes was built?

The fortress of Agios Nikolaos was built by the Grand Master Zakostas on the pier of the port of Mandraki in Rhodes between 1464 and 1467. Until then (1460) its place hosted the church of Agios Nikolaos, a church that gave its name to the fortress.

The damage of the siege by the Turks in 1480 and the earthquake of 1481 was repaired by the Grand Master d'Aubusson who added an additional bastion around the existing tower.

In the middle of the 17th century, a lighthouse was built on its roof, which is still in operation until today. While only in 1998 some restoration works had been undertaken.
