The Lions square is one of the oldest squares of Heraklion and is most well-known for the fountain of Morosini. Officially, the square has the name of the great Greek politician Eleftherios Venizelos and is located in the city center.
In the surrounding area, there are numerous shops, cafeterias, and restaurants. Morosini fountain is a Venetian construction, very important for the city, since this was the place where for centuries the locals were provided with clear, drinking water, that was coming from the spring of Giouhta. The name of the fountain comes from Francesco Morosini who designed it.
Apart from the lions, the fountain is also decorated with dolphins, nymphs, as well as several mythical creatures that were linked to water.
