The archaeological museum of Heraklion is considered as one of the most important museums of Greece since it has the richest and most complete collection of Minoan art in the world.

The museum started as a simple collection of antiquities in 1883 and acquired its own building in 1912. The collections of the museum cover a large period of the history of Crete, from the Neolithic era until the Hellenic-Roman era. Of course, the highlights are the exhibits of the Minoan era, with pieces of art and items of everyday use.

Some of the artifacts of the museum are famous on a worldwide level, such as the figure of the goddess with the snakes in her hands and the Phaistos Disk.
