Halkidiki was deeply influenced by the Holy community of monasteries of the Holy Mountain and has many small churches and monasteries from the Early Christian times. Many of them were destroyed during the occupation of the Ottoman Empire and they were either reconstructed or left as ruins.
An interesting example is the old and unique church of St George at Nikiti. It is an Early Christian Basilica with a mosaic floor while it was constructed in the 5th century. The church is located 3 kilometers southern of Nikiti and very close there have been discovered two vaulted graves which date from the early Christian period.
