Kalamata was a small city, while initially its houses were built quite tight and very close to the city walls of the ancient acropolis. Only in the beginning of the previous century, it started spreading and it was finally united with the houses built by the port.
The old city now is the area between the Ipapanti Church, Spartis street and 23 of March square. It is considered to be the best place to start exploring Kalamata. While wandering around the streets the visitor can see old buildings with traditional architecture, stone-built churches, museums and shops with local products.
Here is also located the small church of Holy Apostles, where on 23 March 1821 took place the first doxology of free Greece after 400 years of Ottoman occupation.
