In the heart of the city of Kalamata someone can find the Archaeological Museum of Messinia, it is located at the central core of the city at the place where the central market was before. The building where it is housed today, is built on the site of the city's old market hall that had many damages after the earthquake of 1986.
The museum is open to the public since 2009 when the main collection was transferred from the Benakio Museum of Kalamata to the new building. The main exhibits are artifacts found in the area of Messinia varying from the Bronze Age until Roman times. There are also sculptures from ancient Koroni, tombstones, parts of mosaics, jewelry, and items of everyday use from the Mycenaean Era.
