The ancient theater is located close to the northwest corner of the temple of Apollo. The great number of written reports we have for the theater gives us a detailed picture of the forms it received during the centuries but also the kind of performances that hosted.
Initially the historians believed that the theater had wooden seats but it is likely that visitors could sit also at the soil. The theater got its present form during the 4th century BC after the stone covering renovations.
Its importance was similar to the ancient Olympia stadium. While with a capacity estimated at 5.000 spectators, it was hosting vocal and instrumental music competitions in the context of the Pythian Games attended by big crowds.
