Thessaloniki - Vergina Imathia Vergina Imathia
The archaeological site of Vergina is 13 kilometres outside of the city of Veroia kai 80 kilometres from Thessaloniki. On the site you can see the palace and the theatre of the ancient city of Aiges, the capital of the kingdom of Macedonia, and the tombs of the kings. The excavations started in the end of 19th century by the French archaeologist L.Heuzey, they were continued by the professor of archaeology Konstantinos Romaios in the '30s, after Macedonia was freed by the Ottoman Empire and became Greek again, they stopped during World War II and the were finished by the professor of archaeology Manolis Andronikos, who discovered the arched tombs, one of which belongs to king Philipppos the Second, father of Alexander the Great. The whole area is formed in such a way that guests can visit the palace and the theatre and then go under the earth and see the tombs from the inside, as well as visit the museum and see exhibitions with jewellery and artefacts found inside the tombs and especially the golden wreath of Philippos the Second, his golden gaiters and the golden reliquary with the "Sun of Vergina" on it. The area is so full of history and hidden secrets that even in 2011, during maintenance works, workers found a tomb from the Early Christian era. The archaeological site is open every day, from 08:00-20:00, except Mondays that is open from 12:00 to 20:00.
