Chora of Naxos

Naxos Settlement

The capital of the biggest Cycladic island has a rich history that spans from the ancient years and through Medieval times to the modern era.

Chora is located in the area of the old city. This is the capital of Naxos which also serves as the main port of the island, built on its west coast. White houses with painted window shutters, flower gardens, narrow streets with arches, and old mansions are the main characteristics of the main settlement.

Inside the walls of the medieval castle town, there was a palace, mansions of the noble families, and 12 towers. From all the buildings of that time, those still standing are the mansion of De la Roca-Barocci that today is an exhibition area, the tower of Sanoudos, the Ursulines school, the Catholic cathedral and the commercial school of Jesuits, that serves now as the archaeological museum.

Other significant landmarks of Chora are the church of Zoodohos Pigi and the small church of Panagia Myrtidiotissa. Everywhere in the village, there are contemporary hotels, shops, cafeterias, bars for every taste.
