The Forest of Fraktos is 92 kilometers away from the city of Drama, on the northeast corner of the prefecture. The highest peak of the mountain, which has the same name as the forest, is situated 1953 meters above the sea level, while the literal meaning of its name means "blocked" and reminds the dense vegetation of the forest.
The forest provides shelter for more than 100 different species of birds and 32 species of mammals, Some of them are considered endangered, while other are endemic and can only be found and observed in this area of the planet. This natural reserve has been declared a World Heritage Site of Nature. It covers an area of 12.000 acres and among others, it hosts black pine, scots pine, beech, European spruce, oaks and many more.
Despite the difficulties in the route it is easily accessible and the visitor can enjoy the scenery and the environment. Be careful though! There is no gas station near the forest so you will have to fιll up your tank in order to have gas to return from the forest to the closest gas station on your way back!
