Taxiarchis Halkidiki

Settlement between Polygyros and Arnaia

Hidden in the Holomontas forest, this is a settlement with classic stone-built houses and churches. A jewel of mountainous Halkidiki.

Taxiarxchis village is situated in the center of Chalkidiki, on Cholomontas mountain, 65 kilometers away from Thessaloniki. It is a beautiful village, with scenic streets and wonderful nature built at an altitude of 650 meters.

Like many other villages of Chalkidiki, the history of Taxiarhis is linked to a monastery of Agion Oros, and more specifically monastery of Dohiariou. The Athonite monastery had a chapel in the village, the church of Archangel Michael. The name of this church was the reason that the village got its current name.

The citizens of the village took part in the War of Independence against the Ottoman Empire as well as in World War II. For many decades it was a relatively isolated village due to the bad road. The road was fixed some decades ago and the village of Taxiarchis which is one of the most traditional villages of Halkidiki started to attract many visitors and tourists.
