The museum is located at the Recreation Area of Platanotopos Maistrou, nearly 12 kilometers (7.45 miles) east of Alexandroupolis. While it is a modern building constructed in total balance with the surrounding environment.

The initial idea that led to the museum construction is highly related to the existence of numerous protected areas with high biodiversity and the need to communicate this characteristic to locals and visitors. The halls of the museum include exhibits that introduce the visitor to the concepts of biodiversity, ecosystems, as well as to the historical human interaction with the environment. The flora and the fauna of Evros region is highlighted and there are detailed presentations of the terrestrial, aquatic and marine ecosystems of the area.
