Alexandroupolis - Agioi Theodoroi Cave Agioi Theodoroi Cave
The rocky church of Saint Theodore is a typical temple reminiscent of the churches of Cappadocia. The iconostasis is built and the walls of the cave have frescoes. It was completed in two phases. A late 11th century called "monastic" and the second in the late 12th and early 13th century, the so-called transitional period. The murals are rare examples of these styles and visualize the Archangel, the kiss of Our Lady with Elizabeth, the Assumption, Visitation and the Great Prayer. The cave is located near the village of Avanta, five kilometers from the castle Avanta-river.
How to get there: From the village of Avanta follow the road to the medieval castle. Going past the castle and continue to drive on the road that goes alongside the railway, after 5 km (3.1 miles) you will find the cave.
