Description: Thessaloniki is the second largest city of Greece, located in Central Macedonia region in the northern mainland. A major and busy port at the Aegean Sea the city is located at the top of the Thermaikos bay which favors its geostrategic position, defining it as the entrance of the Balkan Peninsula. Nowadays, this historic town has emerged as a great metropolis with a total population of 1,200,000 residents. Founded by King Cassander between 316 and 315 BC and was named after the founder's wife, the daughter of King Philip II and half sister of Alexander the Great. During its long history, it came under the control and influence of various cultures including the Romans, Normans and Turks. Was a place of cultural convergence of Balkan ethnicities and always played an important role in developments culminating in the Byzantine period when it was given the designation of "reigning". The multinational character of the city was further risen after the invasion of the Turks and was the reason that attracted the Jewish tribes from the Iberian peninsula and northern Europe to settle there. This made the Thessaloniki the most cosmopolitan city of the Ottoman Empire in the 19th century, which favored the creation of many political movements and movements. The liberation of the city by the Greek forces in 1912, the great fire of 1917 and the extermination of the flourishing Jewish community from the Nazi troops were catalytic events that led to radical changes in population composition and architecture of the city. Today Thessaloniki having followed all the peculiarities of Greek urban development is trying to find its identity. However, without doubt, still retains some spots and attractions on the vibrant aura of the past which deserves to be experienced by all seeking authenticity. The city can be reached through a modern road network linked with Athens and the neighboring countries of the north, by sea and mainly through the international airport "Macedonia" associated with major European and worldwide destinations.
