Timiou Prodromou Monastery

Experience near Serres (10.7km ≈ approx.)

An impressive Orthodox monastery and religious landmark in an idyllic location cared for by hospitable lovely nuns. Its hagiography frescoes are impressive.

The Timiou Prodromou monastery was founded in 1270 by the monk of the Holy Mountain and bishop Saint Ioannikios. Some years later in 1300, Saint Ioakim built the main church, the refectory, and the fortification of the monastery. The monastery is located 12 kilometers north-east of the city of Serres among the lush vegetation of the Menikio Mountain Gorge.

The main church hosts frescoes and iconographies which are creations of the famous artist Emmanouil Panselinos. This fact makes the monastery, apart from a pilgrimage of religious importance, a great monument with Byzantine art and a famous destination as well.

The first patriarch of Constantinople, after the Turkish conquest, Gennadios Sholarios became a monk at the monastery from 1457 to 1462 and today after his burial at the monastery, his remnants are secured in a special relic shine. Since 1986 a fraternity of nuns takes care of the monastery and welcomes the great numbers of pilgrims and guests who visit it everyday.
