Alistrati Cave

Experience between Drama and Nea Peramos Kavala

Slowly carved through limestone by the Aggitis river, this cave has subterranean formations that will amaze you. It's a kilometer long.

The cave of Alistrati is located 6 kilometers away from Alistrati village and more specifically in "Petroto" area which is totally 50km (31 miles) away from Serres. It attracts many visitors not only from Greece but also from abroad, as it is considered one of the largest and most beautiful caves in Europe. The cave of Alistrati became known in 1975, and today out of its total length of 3 kilometers, 1 kilometer is open to the public.

The surface of the cave is 25,000 sq meters (6.17 acres). And the length of 3000 meters (9842 feet), while its age is estimated at around 2 million years. The temperature inside the cave during May found after measurements almost constant at 20 degrees Celsius, and the humidity of 70-75%, while it has natural ventilation. The cave features rich decor, with a great variety of stalagmites, stalactites and ekentrites.

Within just a short distance from the cave a visitor can find the canyon Aggitis. Beside the beauties of the river, everyone can admire the flora and fauna which are among the rarest that can be met since it includes many endemic species and some endangered ones.
