Description: Samothraki is situated at the northeastern edge of the Aegean near Imbros and the coast of Turkey. 80% of the island consists of mountains, with the highest peak at the “Moon” at 1664 meters. From there, according to Homer, god Poseidon with his son Agenor watched the battle of Troy. The island's capital is “Chora”, which is 6 km afar from, the only port of the island, the Kamariotisa. In Chora cars are not allowed, as the roads are narrow and most are tile paved. The first inhabitants of Samothrace were Carians, and later settled Thracians who gave the first name of the island "Saonisos" and "Saos", the tallest mountain on the island. It is said that at Samothraki was where found refuge the “Kabeiroi”. According to legend, once the Black Sea overflowed and broke the barrier set up by the Clashing Rocks, resulting to an avalanche that hit also Samothrace. Since the flood the only ones who survived were Kabeiroi, mystical deities of Phrygian origin who found refuge at the top of the mountain Saos. Their father was believed to be god Hephaestus and their mother kabiris. From them came and the Kaveiria mysteries, which was said to be ceremonies to initiate the secret religion of the ancient Greeks. Samothraki ferry links mainly with Alexandroupolis and Kavala and also with Lavrion (Athens) and other islands.
