Informations
Population: 54.900
Description: Rethymno is the third largest city of Crete, with ~33,000 residents. Truly it is one of the most beautiful destinations in Greece, Rethymno with its imposing presence of mountain Psiloreitis and a history that spans for more than 4,500 years. The city was following its course since the Minoan period, the classical and Hellenistic era, the Roman and Byzantine times however from 1204 onwards the Venetian will leave indelible cultural signs on Rethymnon. The 16th century finds the city in great spiritual development, which will be discontinued abruptly after the Turkish conquest in 1669. After the independence of the island in 1897, Rethymno begins to flourish again. Byzantine churches and monasteries, renaissance monuments, caves, countless beaches and enchanting villages throughout the county, await visitors to wander and admire. Access to Rethymnon is possible by ferry with daily connections from Piraeus to the port of Rethymnon, but is served by the airports of Chania and Heraklion.
