Eight kilometers south-east from the city center is located the winery-castle of Achaia Clauss, a company with an extraordinary history in winemaking tradition. Its founder was the Bavarian Gustav Clauss, who came to Greece in 1854 in order to work at a German raisin company. When he familiarised himself with the region, he bought a vineyard, then another one, and finally, he created a big and robust company.
The company was founded in 1861 and soon became a well-known company in Greece and abroad. One of the most well-known and historical labels is Mavrodafni, a very sweet, red wine. While another label that dates from 1881 is Demestica wine.
The castle that houses the winery is one of the most impressive buildings in the region and it’s being visited by more than 200.000 tourists. During the visit, someone is able to see the whole procedure of how the wine is made, from grapes until the final part of the maturation of the wine in carved oak barrels.
