Description: The largest and most fertile island of the Cyclades, Naxos is located in the center of the cluster. The prevailing theories about the name origin of the island are, first to be from "Naxos", the ruler of the first inhabitants and second from the ancient word "naxai" meaning sacrifices, because of the rich sacrifices offered by the locals to the gods. Like most islands of the Cyclades, Naxos is inhabited since the Neolithic era, in which developed a remarkable Cycladic civilization that flourished in 3000 BC and continued into the Mycenaean era and the classical, which was inhabited by Ionians and is the epoch where Naxos experienced its greatest boom in economic and cultural terms. In 490 BC Naxos was destroyed by the Persians, since it was member of the Athenian Alliance, while in subsequent years the island was conquered by several successive conquerors, as the Roman and the Byzantine Empire, the Venetians, the Ottoman until the union with the first independent Greek state in 1830. Today is a very significant tourist destination, thanks to the alternations of landscapes offering, which differentiates it from other islands of the Cyclades. With important monuments, rich religious and folk traditions, picturesque villages and stunning beaches, Naxos can meet the needs and desires of each and every guest. Naxos can be reached by ferry from Piraeus or other Cycladic islands, or by air.
