Kavala - Castle of Kavala Castle of Kavala
It is one of the monuments that could be characterised as trademarks of Kavala is the castle. The Acropolis of the Castle is a 65 metres long, Byzantine building that was constructed in 1425. It is a complex of bastions and strong walls that could guarantee the defence of the city, which was attacked frequently because of the strategic location of the city. After the fall of Constantinople, the colonisation of Kavala and, basically the founding of a new city, Suleiman the Magnificent and Vizier Ibrahim expanded and thickened the walls, in order to protect the houses of the civilians as well. They also built the aqueduct in Kamares and transformed Kavala into an almost impregnable and fully equipped medieval castle. Although the walls where attacked and bombed several times, some parts of them are in a great condition until today. In fact, they are used as a background for many cultural events. It is worth mentioning that the Castle and Kamares are the two most photographed places of Kavala.
How to get there: You can take the train from Omonoia square and you can stop at "Acropolis".
