In the heart of the city of Kalamata, at the corner of Benaki and Papazoglou streets you will find Benakeio Archaeological Museum in a Venetian building, one of the most beautiful buildings of the city. It was named after Antonios Benakis, the owner of the house, whose kids and grand kids gave his house to the Archaeological Society after his own wish. It opened its doors as a museum in 1971 and has many collections of items found in the area of Messinia varying from the Bronze Age until Roman times. You can see sculptures from ancient Koroni, tomb stones, parts of mosaics, jewellery and items of everyday use from the Mycenaean Era.
