Perama Cave

Ioannina Experience

A guided tour in this massive cave takes approximately 45 minutes and will take you to the most chthonian places through caverns and walkways.

The cave of Perama is located approximately 4 kilometers from the city center on a hill named Goritsa. It is a unique, natural ecosystem with rare palaeontological findings and the path for the visitors that is approximately 1.100 meters.

It belongs to the limestone caves category and has 19 different types of stalactites and stalagmites a number which is generally very large. It is the first cave in Greece that could be visited by tourists, while it stands for its size and its distinctive beauty.

The cave was discovered by accident in 1940, during the Second World War by citizens of Perama who were trying to find shelter from the bombings. Later a systematic investigation and mapping of the cave was followed, while in 1956, fossilized bones and teeth of the cave bear were discovered.

The exit of the cave, which is 25 meters higher than the entrance, compensates the visitor with the amazing view of the city of Ioannina including the lake and its island. At Perama there are numerous hotels, cafes, and restaurants where someone can try local wine and traditional pies from Ioannina.
