Description: Astypalea, known as the "butterfly of the Aegean" because of its shape, is the westernmost island of the Dodecanese. It is between the Cyclades and the Dodecanese. The ancient greeks called it the "Bank of the Gods" because of the abundance of flowers, fruit and hunting game that existed on the island. Astypalea is surrounded by many small islands, while it is composed of two parts joined by a narrow strip of land. Capital town is Chora (typical for the main town of many isles), which is said to be the most beautiful town in all the Aegean islands. Astypalaia, which mean literraly the "Old City", is an island rich in history and tradition, and also has many churches, with the Virgin Portaitissa to stand out from the group. The way to get there by ferry boat lasts about 12 hours from the port of Piraeus and the island has an airport in Maltezana with limited flights from Athens El.Venizelos airport.
