Description: Agios Nikolaos (Saint Nicholas) is the capital of Lasithi county on the western side of the Gulf of Mirabello. The name comes from the Byzantine church in the bay of St. Nicholas, and the previous name was Mandraki, as there were many goat corrals (mantra). The city's history begins in ancient times, when in the same position was the port of Lato, an important city of the Hellenistic period, which was later in decay in Roman and first Byzantine era. In the years that follow, there are no other references to the city until 1206 when was conquered by the Genoese who built the castle of Mirabello and thus the name of the bay. An earthquake destroyed the castle and left no trace or ruins. During the Ottoman empire Agios Nikolaos was uninhabited and was inhabited again in 1870 mainly Greeks persecuted by the Turks. It is a scenic and popular resort and despite being the county's capital it does not resemble any urban center. It is considered the most developed tourist town of Crete offering its visitors many attractions together with a very organized tourist infrastructure all inspired by the magnificent Cretan hospitality.
