Description: Mount Athos whose official name is "Holy Community of Mount Athos" located on the Athos peninsula of Halkidiki is an "Autonomous Monastic State" within the limits of the Greek Repubic. Considered the center of Orthodox monasticism beyond religious status, its importance has gained national historical and cultural dimensions. This area gathered ascetics of the early Christian era and the foundation of the first monastery in 963 AD by the founder of the monastic life coenobitic Athanasius the "Athonite". As autonomous political division it is under the Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople. Divided into twenty self-governed regions that correspond to the same number of communal monasteries, while the abbots in charge of monasteries constitute the Holy Assembly which holds the legislative power. Executive power rests with the Holy Supervision and is structured hierarchically from the top 5 monasteries and other 4 members. The Greek State is represented by the Civil Governor who oversees compliance with the Athonite Association and a link to the Foreign Ministry and the Ecumenical Patriarchate. Today, the Holy Mountain is estimated that there are about 2000 monks whose main occupation and duty is to pray unceasingly. Alongside there is a wide range of occupations of the monks including cultivating the land to cover the basic needs of food, maintenance and expansion of perennial temples and buildings, as well as hosting numerous visitors who arrive annually in the monasteries. Additionally particularly known contribution is the Athonite monks evolution of hagiographic art and advancement of the global secretariat rescue and recovery of numerous works that adorn the libraries of monasteries. A special feature of Mount Athos is that women are not allowed and because of this it is also known as the "Garden of the Virgin Mary" as it is regarded that Virgin Mary is the only female of the region. So in case you belong to the male population you can schedule a visit to the abbey as daily allowed only 130 people (120 Greeks and 10 foreigners). The overnight stay can be covered again with prearrangement, a monastery, an hermitage, or a cell of the many that are scattered all along the peninsula. For transportation you can use the corresponding buses as prohibited the use of private cars. However without hesitation we would recommend hiking through which you will be able to experience the unspoilt and unique natural environment. Finally for women provided daily a cruise that navigates the coast of the peninsula and passes by the coastal monasteries.
